Baptism Request

In the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Christian baptism is a sacrament, along with communion (or the Lord’s Supper).

We practice and celebrate both infant and adult baptism, believing there are deep Scriptural symbols and theological reasons to support both. Infant baptism usually requires that at least one parent be a member of our church.

The word “sacrament” came from old Roman times. It was used for the sacred oath made by soldiers as they took on their military duties. The church borrowed the term to characterize these practices involving water, bread, and wine as a demonstration of our solid commitment to Christ and his calling on our lives, and it has stuck.

While other faith traditions have more sacraments or none at all, we believe that Jesus commanded us to do these two particular things in our life together, and we hold them in high regard. In his Great Commission, Jesus commanded his disciples (and that includes us) to baptize as we make disciples (Matthew 28:19); and at the Last Supper, he said to “do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19) (Paul recounts the latter also in 1 Corinthians 11:24-25.)
